Friday May 6th was a beautiful day, the sun shone brightly especially over the Acorn Shoot on the Compton Manor Estate where the eighth Test Valley Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot was held. By 7.45am the first of 140 competitors had arrived in anticipation of an enjoyable days shooting, but first to savour the delicious breakfast bacon baps, which this year again had been very kindly supplied by John Robinson of Stockbridge. Having consumed adequate quantities of bacon, tea and coffee shooting began at 9.15 am and the 35 teams (4 to a team) began their morning of sport shooting up to a 130 clays from six single clay stands, a two and  four man flush where the clays fly in all different directions and heights testing shooting skills to the extreme and is probably the most fun. There was also the opportunity to shoot a separate pool shoot competition which was not only very popular but very keenly contested. In addition and new this year BASC provided an Air Gun Stand for which BSA had donated an Air Rifle which was given as a separate raffle draw prize. Many of the very experienced Clay Shooters were staggered at the different shooting skill required for this type of shooting. Also new this year was a gun cleaning service offered by Greenfields of Salisbury, an opportunity taken up by most of the shooters with the £5 charge being donated to the charities. Very many thanks to Greenfields.

The teams were a mixture of complete novices and very experienced shots. We also had three all Ladies teams with  another twelve ladies mixed in with other teams all competing for the Top Lady Gun Trophy and proving yet again that this is no longer a male dominated sport.  The Top Male Gun trophy and BASC Perpetual Trophy was won by Phil King with a score of 115 and Ladies Top Gun Trophy and second BASC Perpetual Trophy was won by Alice Stimpson with a score of 85. Phillip Parker retained his Side by Side Top Gun award with a score of 105. The Top Male team award went to ‘The Bordeaux Bandits’ a local team captained by Alan Woods with a score of 515 and ‘The All Girls’ team from Sparsholt retained the Ladies team prize with a score of 295.The Pool shoot was won by Tony Harper from The Compton Manor Estates team after a shoot off  with our very own John Perry. All the Trophy winners team scores and photographs are now available on the web site.

During the morning raffle tickets were sold for a selection of 40 prizes and a very special separate raffle for a beautiful pair of diamond and 18ct. gold snowflake earrings valued at £1300 donated by Susannah Lovis of Burlington Arcade, London SW1.

A magnificent lunch prepared by Jo Brooke Webb and her team of ladies from the Winchester branch of Cancer Research UK was served in the huge marquee. After lunch the trophies were presented by Amber Hill a team member for the Rio Olympics later this year as well as the current ladies UK Champion and joint holder of the Ladies world record.

Following the prize giving Mike Woodhall conducted the auction of 15 lots all of which had been very generously donated by local individuals, local and national businesses, as had the raffle prizes which together raised a total of over £7000.00p This contributed to the total

amount raised on the day of over £21,000.00p which will be shared between Cancer Research UK and the Village Hall Redevelopment Fund.

Work started on the arrangements for the day back in November 2015 and I am extremely grateful to my committee who have worked so hard to ensure this event is the success that it is and is now held in very high esteem in the Clay Pigeon Shooting World.  This could not have happened without the help of so many volunteers on the day, more than 30 in total, mainly from the village to whom I am also extremely grateful. Thank you to you all.

We already have entries and auction lots promised for next years’ shoot which will be held on 5th May again at the Acorn Shoot.
