Friday May 9th dawned very dull and overcast, but by 9 am the valley was full of sunshine and alive to the sound of shotguns and the 6th Test Valley Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot in aid of Cancer Research UK and our Village Hall development fund had started. In all thirty four teams, one hundred and thirty six guns, a mixture of complete novices and very experienced shots, arrived at The Acorn Shoot on the Compton Estate at 07.45 for a bacon bap and then a morning  of ‘serious fun’! shooting one hundred clays each from ten stands with a pool shoot and ‘have a go stand’ thrown in for good measure.

Two of the thirty four teams were all Ladies  and fifteen were from King’s Somborne/Houghton. The Gentleman’s Top Gun with a score of 110 was Trevor Bell from Chandlers Ford and the Lady’s Top Gun was Penny Barker from Sparsholt with a score of 72.Phillip Parker from Houghton won the side by side category  and the one winner from the village was John Perry who shared the Top Spot in the Pool Shoot after very intense rivalry with Rob Lamb of Sparsholt .

Once the shooting was completed all the teams and several guests adjourned for lunch in the huge marquee that had been erected specially for the shoot.

We were very honoured  this year by the presence of Amber Hill the 2013 BBC  Young Sports Personality of the Year, World Championship Gold Medallist to mention but two of her awards of which two others were Top Lady Gun in our shoot in 2010 and 2011 . She spent the morning mingling with the competitors selling tickets for the Special Raffle for which the prize was a pair of beautiful daisy shaped diamond and 18ct.gold earrings valued at £1300 donated by Susannah Lovis Jewellers of Burlington Arcade.

After lunch Amber  presented the trophies, which by her own admission, was the first time she had given rather than received  and was a unique and enjoyable experience for her.

Following the prize -giving , Mike Woodhall conducted our charity auction, all the lots of which had been very generously donated by individuals and businesses and which also included a huge teddy bear donated by Amber that raised an eye watering £240 another first for Amber!  Contributing to a wonderful total of over £4000 for the auction alone.

In addition to the auction we had a magnificent raffle with prizes to the value of over £1300 again all donated by individuals, local and national businesses.

Many folk from the village now contribute to the huge success of this event. The organising committee, the breakfast team, the clearing-up team led by Eileen Reynolds are all from K S and the catering team led by Jo Brooke-Webb are nearly all from KS. Without their dedicated efforts and hard work we would not attract the number of teams that now regard our shoot as a must in their calendar and helps to raise the huge amount each year for our charities, the amount this year being in excess of £19,000.

The members of the organising committee are Colin Reeve,Tony Brooke-Webb, Ian Beacham , Jack Cawthra, John Davies, Keith Watson, Tim Long and myself.
